Gardening Gifts FAQ:

I like to look at all the catalogs (Michigan Bulb, Nature Hills, Park Seed). I have never ordered from one though. I don’t want to waste money on junky plants. Any suggestions for a catalog that has plants that are worth it?

I’ve never ordered plants from a catalog. But, I have ordered some seed.

I’m not sure which one is best. I’ve ordered from Park, Burpee, Gurney and Shumway. All were dependable. Catalog prices and shipping have gotten a bit outrageous over the last few years. Catalog seed has always been dependable

I’d prefer to buy plants at a nursery so I can see them for myself.

I did order 6 fruit trees years ago. They were shipped at the right time.
And, all lived and bore fruit.

I don’t think one catalog business is better than another. But, things seem to go faster when I order from the catalog on line and pay with a credit card.

You might consider visiting the garden web forums and asking your question there.

I have ordered from Michigan Bulb and Park Seed and Gurneys and Burpees. They are all ok. When you get the least expensive plants, just know that they will be very small bare rooted plants. They will most likely survive, but they won’t do much the first year. If you want something to look good right away, go somewhere local and buy it in a pot.

Michigan Bulb.

I like Bluestone Perennials for plants and Thompson and Morgan for seeds. They both have more unique items and are reasonably priced. Some fun dream-on catalogs (who would pay $120 for a mail-order plant, or pay $35 shipping) include Plant Delights and Stokes Tropicals. Park Seed is a good choice, though, for common seeds. But you could probably find those at your local nursery or hardware store.

I get many catalog and they are mostly the same. They all guarantee you plants for a year. You have to look at what is the best price and shipping. Shipping is were they get you. Just watch for price. Some give you buy one and get one free too.

I am sure that there are plenty of good catalogs out there to order from. You could probably check the BBB to see how good they are. We have ordered from Gurneys and Jungs for the last six years and have never been disappointed. Good luck.
P.S. It will also depend on what you want to order.

this website, GardenWatchdog, has reviews from gardeners like us…good or bad, you can usually find any of the companies here….

just look up the name of whatever catalog company you’re thinking about…. use the alphabet near the bottom of the page….

Happy Gardening!

I like Wayside Garden, but have bought some great plants on Ebay, surprisingly. Good luck!
