It is a by-product from the animal rendering industry used as a fertiliser.

Yes, the blood and bone meals are by-products from slaughter houses. Since the Mad Cow scare the products come from pig.

The meals are dual-purpose. The blood is great for added nitrogen, the bone is great for making blossoms grow faster and stronger. And both also are great rodent repellents as rodents don’t like the smell of other animals.

I sprinkle my meals directly on the soil around the plants and let the watering do the rest.

The only drawback to bone meal is that my dogs love to lick the remnant bone meal out of the bag. It does them no harm but I also don’t want to fertilize them.
