Gardening Gifts FAQ:
We’re going to attempt to garden this year for the first time and we’re looking for any tips you may have to help us. We’re going to plant some flowers and probably tomatoes, green beans, lettuce and maybe watermelon. We don’t get a lot of sun in our yard so that’s going to be a big disadvantage. Any tips will be appreciated.

OK, first off, when you are ready to start, you have to grind up the dirt with a dirt grinder (I don’t know what they are called) and then get all the rock’s out of the dirt, rock’s make it harder for plants to grow. Then you can plant the plants, I cant tell you if you need fertilizer, I don’t know that much, I’m only 12. but me and my mom garden a lot in the spring and summer. With the sun problem, you need quite a lot of sun so make sure there isn’t any things by your garden so those things don’t cover your garden with shade. Also, I think my my mom waters our garden every morning in the summer, and every couple of days in the spring. Well, I hope I helped, and good luck with that garden!
Hey Tom,
Water deep but infrequent, be sure you have drainage. Keep tomato plants in their own area, maybe with some garlic around, and marigolds (to keep out the rabbits).
Use a raised bed method for your garden, that way you don’t walk on the plants roots - like rows. Easy to water too.
Here are some expert beginner web sites, you will like the mother earth one.
Keep reading. Be sure to follow the package instructions for spacing, and go light on the chemicals. Some fertilizer and safe insect repellents are OK, but be sure to read the labels and do not put more than recommended!
Happy Gardening (note: Watering is 80% of gardening - not too much, not too little).
Ask your gardening neighbors since they know local conditions. Plant the vegetables in the sunnier spots. Save the shade for flowers such as begonia, impatiens, coleus…
